When you grow up in a semi-rural area, then spend 10+ years living in dense housing situations, open land and the quiet of acreage holds a siren song. While planning our August trip through New England, I knew I wanted to include some outdoors time, and during my AirBnB searching for places to stay I ran across this wonderful Craftsman style home near Ithaca, New York. Complete with pond and rowboat, hammock and child swing in the trees, fire pit and beautiful acreage, it looked nearly perfect. After figuring out the proximity of Cornell and the Finger Lakes region, I was nearly bouncing in my seat when my reservation request was accepted.
During our stay the kids spent every minute that they could, outside. I’ve found that nothing is better than listening to bubbles of giggles floating up through open windows as littles entertain themselves by enjoying the natural world. I want to give them that experience more often. Electronics are great, and here to stay, but there is nothing like appreciating the world outside your front door. Hands on exploration of the way nature is so intricately linked in symbiosis. The overwhelming feeling of your own smallness when standing in a forest full of trees or a huge hayfield. Childhood is so fleeting and so many interests pull our time, but this, this is important. I feel it deeply.
