Oh, the joys that off camera flash has opened up to these children. I’ve never had such willing models in my life. Movement is where it is at, and off camera flash freezes movement, as well as those huge smiles. While I love the directionality of the light that the shoot through umbrella created, it was during this shoot that I realized I needed to be able to control the light even more in order to achieve the type of light that I prefer. Shoot through umbrellas do an awesome job of illuminating an entire room and that is rarely the lighting effect that I aim to achieve. I have a softbox with grid on the way that I can’t wait to try out.
I left this shot pulled back so that you could see the position of the shoot through umbrella, as well as the very strong shadows thrown on the camera right wall.
After the kids were thoroughly worn out, I sent them off to play and sat down to try a few self portraits. Rembrandt light is simple to achieve with one light off camera flash!
