Holy cow. Grain.
I opened up these scans, quickly flipped through them, and immediately closed up the folder. It didn’t help that on that day, we had warning of a huge thunderstorm that was supposed to produce 70+ mph wind, golf ball size hail and possible strong tornadoes. All 3 of the boys had just recovered from a stomach virus, and both my husband and myself fell victim that evening.
It simply wasn’t the best day to be taken aback by film scans that I had been (not-so-patiently) waiting for! After I gave it a few days, though, I am seeing the beauty and interest in these. The grain adds a certain mystery and nostalgia to the images, and used in the correct imagery, I can see how it would be a very effective aid for communicating story. The film noir images in this set handle the grain much more effectively that than the smiling portraits of a toddler. Also, my exposure is improving. I made a very conscious effort to get a handle on that, through the first half of February, and I’ve given myself an incentive to nail exposure consistently. I think I need an autofocus film camera for my quick moving little subjects. Right? ;)
