I have an issue with ‘saving’ film frames. And I don’t think I’m alone in this…. There is only one chance to make a good frame when shooting film. Whether -or not- you did a stellar job of exposing, composing and focusing you’re stuck with the image that was created when you pressed the shutter. Bought and paid for. When I shoot digital I feel more freedom to mess up. There’s an ease in knowing that deleting 5 frames to keep 1 has no cost associated with it, besides the time it took me to shoot and cull. Perhaps I should have powered through this doubtful, angsty stage by now and triumphantly laid hold to the knowledge that very rarely will I shoot a full roll of keeper images, and that’s ok! But, I haven’t. So, I shot an entire roll of portraits with the medium format film that I committed to shooting in March. My externally communicated reason for shooting those portraits was that I find it valuable to regularly document the growth of the kids via traditional portraits, and that IS true. But the real reason was that I’m scared to waste film. Shhhh.
